WHY THIS CLASS?  WHY NOW?

For someone who teaches Yin Yoga, I have always had an inordinate amount of Yang energy. This yang focus helped me finish graduate school and begin a successful career in healthcare. This approach seemed to work fine until Hurricane Katrina suddenly forced me to leave my home and career in New Orleans. The life I had worked so hard to “achieve” was now crumbling all around me.

I decided to take a temporary sabbatical from my career to go “figure things out” at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. When I arrived, I told a therapist that I was eager to get my life back on track and asked for “homework assignments” to ensure quick progress. She looked at me and with a kind yet forceful tone said, “Your homework is to REST!”

Rest? Rest? I don’t have time to rest, I thought! Well……….actually, I guess I did because instead of staying for 8 weeks, I remained for 18 months. When I finally left, it was no longer as a healthcare executive, but as a yoga teacher, with a new found appreciation for living a  more balanced life.

I know many of you struggle with balancing the need for action and achievement with the need for reflection and rest. We are certainly not encouraged to devote as much time to our inner experience as to our outer one. However, we need to turn the tide if we want to live in a world that is healthy and whole. When we make positive changes in  ourselves, we create a ripple effect of healing for the people around us, for our environment and for the earth itself. We're all in this together, so let's "be the change", now.

Hope For A World Out Of Balance!

I’m sure, like me, there are times when you feel overwhelmed by the state of the world. Everywhere you look, from the health of the planet to global politics, things appear to be getting more extreme and out of control. You may wonder, is there anyway to change the current trajectory?

Taoists would immediately recognize the cause of our predicament. The modern world is out of balance and we’ve lost the dynamic harmony that keeps opposing forces in check. We live in a culture that places inordinate value on yang qualities such as action, achievement, competition, acquisition, consumption, speed and external focus. At the same time, we neglect and devalue yin qualities, such as being, releasing, stillness, cooperation, interconnection and inner experience. As a result, we are witnessing the effects of  long term imbalance on our planet, in our communities and in our own physical and mental health.

Living in a state of imbalance can cause:

  • Feelings of overwhelm and lack of control
  • Increased anxiety and fear of the future
  • Loneliness and depression
  • Chronic health issues such as inflammation, insomnia & digestive disorders
  • Inability to focus and decreased attention span

Can you relate?
